I believe that government should be actively involved in protecting their country’s cultural diversity through legislation and funding. If governments were to acknowledge indigenous peoples of a given area and promote their cultural diversity, I feel this would provide a greater sense of community and solidarity within a country. This could mean great things for countries that have indigenous populations and governments that might not have treated them fairly in history, as we see in so many countries.
As we studied for this week’s readings, The Diverse Australia Program aims for a more equitable and respectful community. I believe this model is a great framework for all countries to follow. The idea that all are important and belong in the community regardless of racial or religious differences is something all countries should strive for. In addition funding for The Diverse Australia Program and similar programs serves the community by addressing local issues. If programs like this were to be adopted, there is a great opportunity to improve local communities.
Some people might say that the government’s place shouldn’t be in special interests like promoting diversity. However, I disagree. I believe that if a country recognizes its own cultural diversity as strength, or even a great resource, this can restore cooperation between a country’s government and it’s people.
